in some games typing out a joke or something non-game related to start the conversation is smooth and people won't read you scum or town for it

whereas in others, if you play with people who have a tendency to grudge you or if they're noobs, they'll scumread you for it

in most cases it's easier to just wait until someone else says something and comment on their lines, even something as simple as "so & so's entrance is null" because it shows that you're actively reading the game in the interest of winning
