Ban guns from competitive

deleteddeletedover 11 years ago

can we do this? gunsmith has been around for years and there has never been an objectively good gun setup, and thats because guns are horrible for competitive. Giving one person the ability to remove another from the game is a terrible idea for competitions and is ridiculously easy to throw games/troll with. Yeah, guns are fun but fun has never been the #1 priority for the competition and variety has never been a factor when deciding to ban the dozens of roles and setups that arent allowed to be made competitive.

same reason why guns should be banned; just because they're fun doesn't mean they're suitable for competitions.
it's unanimously agreed upon that point farms ruin the competition wheras gun mechs are SUBJECTIVE

Can we stop arguing :P Guns are ok. :) What is next? Oracle revealing mafia is too townsided, so we should ban Oracles?
Vigorothover 11 years ago
Priority IS on fun because fun is traffic for the site and lucid wants to make money. Anyone arguing the competition is not just another means for people to have fun here is wrong.

Some people have fun jerking off in public. If liberty is a priority why is jerking off in public not allowed?
I could not have worded this any better

Foodlion, if every game was a point farm, which is what would happen if even 1 point farm was allowed in competitive, there would be no competition. Everyone would get the same points at the same time

Hence, it wouldn't be fun

The blacklist isn't that long at all, all things considered. Most of it is just variations of the same few pointfarms with minor changes.

mika i got an exam tomorrow maybe later

Because you want to watch something with me, my young padawan.

half is an obvious exaggeration so your last few posts are pointless, it goes without saying that there are an overwhelming amount of setups on the blacklist to a point where a blacklisted setup topic with a simple list would be unfeasible

I'm just on break calm down its a temp demod.

What 'Mine' said. A&R shouldn't have been comped this round because Armed & Vested was comped 2 rounds ago, and I don't know why it was allowed given that's against the current rules as they're essentially the same setup.

5 rounds is too much though.

gun setups being easily throwable is a decent argument; guns being fun is a terrible argument because the whole point of mafia is fun it's just that people have different definitions for fun. Some people think shooting guns is fun whilst others find scumhunting setups like VDLI and BV their cup of tea, in the end it's all subjective.

I don't see a reason to blacklist an entire mechanic from comp play. I loathe gun setups but some trophy winners love them and would like to see a round with a fun gun setup (see: hollywood illusions). It's not worth blacklisting imo, just blacklist the hilariously unbalanced setups and you're fine.

why do you wait to step down from being am od to post an opinion, what is this uniform fascism moderator garbage where every mod is a sheep and doesn't post an opinion on anything and WHY does the quote button never work.
deleteddeletedover 11 years ago
tl;dr dont constrict users who like gun setups just because you dislike them and don't think they're "a legitimate mechanic"

I don't think banning guns from competition would lead to their rise in red hearts. I'm still of the mindset gun setups are popular because they're more luck oriented so it's easy to be mediocre and carried to a trophy as a result.

Gun setup mindset:
"I will give you a trophy, you just have to flip heads 35/50 times with this coin"
That's a bit of an exaggeration but we've some really mediocre players get carried on gun setups since Vancy became admin and loosened the restrictions.
Yeah, which is why I think pushing for every 5th round instead of every 3rd and clearly outlining what falls under the variants rule would help out a bit.

At the very least there'd be more diversity. Regardless if it has anything to do with guns.

To be fair the best players aren't going to win trophies all the time. There's a huge luck element in mafia that is integral to the game that you cannot eliminate. However, I do think there are ways to mitigate that in such that skill becomes more important.

In short - extremist/idealist me would like to see guns banned. Realistic me thinks there's a more middle of the road solution that can be more inclusive while pushing for more diversity, which I think is near the core of the issue.
I agree, I share the same sentiment but I think 5 rounds without a specific popular setup will end up making the round rather dull and/or boring. I think 3 is a fine number if implemented absolutely correctly.

Last time I saw the blacklisted setups list, I do not remember it having over 600,000 setups on it.
