But Shariah law isn't the law. I think that's the really basic thing they just don't understand.
If two people want to agree to follow a bunch of strict religious rules in their marriage, let them.
If two people want to agree to demand satisfaction and duel each other with guns in the alley to the death, let them.
It's the government's business to provide a system of law and justice as fair and impartial and secular as possible. It is not the business of the government to impose the protection of that law onto people who are willing to sign a written agreement saying they don't want it.
