if you're hunting locally, i would recommend just going out to complexes and asking around for vacancies. if it's for a different area, maybe craigslist could give a lead or two.
That's true but I feel like we could revitalize competitive even further. For example, now that we have a Main Lobby and no more Training Lobby (which was a colossal cancer to this community), the distinction between red hearts and gold hearts is meaningless. Especially because you D U M B B O Y S ban every fun setup anyways like my cool HateMe setup so.
The solution is simple: Take away the distinction between Red Hearts and Gold Hearts. No one needs to register to be a part of the Competition. The first five games of the day you play on one of the competitive-approved setups are the ones that count and you still get more hearts after that.
Of course, that still won't change the fact the cancerous people will keep playing the same two setups over and over again, but it probably helps and it doesn't seem to have any disadvantage.

I just like it when people say 'Mafia was better back when there was no merge' because I can't remember all the times people would complain about training players ruining their games all the time

Well the merge was because Phil wanted to de sticky comp altogether. So renaming training main and putting a comp there was the only solution there really

comp died before the merge, in fact the merge was an attempt to revitalize comp.

Back in my day, before I self deleted my account that I had great e-success on, I ruled and everything on the site ruled. Now I post behind the guise of a new edgier name that fits better with my self-perceived aesthetic
Meanwhile I give no props to this userbase, that is seemingly still playing the same dumb setups over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
