If you're like me, you're done using Skype because it's hot garbage. That said, I'm probably going to hold the chat for this Summer's Olympics on Discord as opposed to Skype. But several people are still on Skype. There's a big SPLIT between who is on Skype and who is on Discord. However if the poll results say Skype is more favorable, then I'll suck it up and use Skype for the Summer to host the event. So tell me, which instant messenger do you prefer?
what matthew said, it's in the settings under notificaions
i'm laughign thought at ally and i being ruthless queens who don't gaf about who wants to talk to us, meanwhile matthew over here has the lil badge turned on... pure

i'm confused. do u not want that red circle to show up on the discord task bar? because that can be turned off. this is my discord in my taskbar right now (ft. tera yeet). as u can see there's no red circle or anything.
so if u want the taskbar icon to still remain the same no matter how many times you were bumped (ironically, this is how things USED to be) that can be easily changed

ok since we're talking about it in depth i'm going to mention the only thing i dislike about discord
so i keep myself on do not disturb on both platforms and normally mute group chats. the one thing i like about skype is that when i have chats muted, it will still display whether or not the chat was bumped when i look at skype without displaying something on my taskbar
so like when someone talks in a skype group i have muted, skype looks like this on my taskbar: https://i.imgur.com/03E3dAD.png
and when i open it i can easily see which groups have been spoken in / how much has been said: https://i.imgur.com/JSwHU9q.png
but with discord if i want to know if people spoke in a chat i have to turn off notifications but not mute it, otherwise the half circle doesn't show up, and i'm stuck with this in the taskbar https://i.imgur.com/SeaGtFQ.png which i don't WANT on for all my servers, just like one or two important ones. but if i mute it so that doesn't show up, it no longer gives me the half circle and i have to click into the server to see if anyone spoke.
y'all i'm really about to right a 20 page dissertation with a well developed thesis about why this lobby should switch over to discord, ESPECIALLY for ORGs
Only if it includes how it prevents unwanted pregnancies.

also, discord does let you see how many individual chats are bumped. for example, here is a screenshot of the servers i'm in.
as you can see there is a little half-circle next to some of my discord servers, but not all. the half-circle denotes that a server has unread messages in it that i might want to attend to. the same feature is available within servers too.
above is a screenshot of some of the text channels of the official LLSIF server. as you can see, the half-circle is present next to all of the channels that have unread messages in them.
discord literally provides all of the features/services that are necessary for a good messaging app/program along with even more features and services that push it into the category of a great one.
ANOTHER function discord offers involving mentions is the fact that you don't have to scroll through hundreds of text messages just to see why someone mentioned you. by using the recent mentions tab you can literally see WHERE someone mentioned you and WHAT they said, therefore allowing you to decide whether or not it is important or not to reply to a particular mention.
oh, i do think there is one think skype has over discord. and that's the ability to set nicknames for people in groups/on your friends list. i hope discord introduces the feature to personally nickname someone because that was a really great feature.
other than that, discord is simply better in all aspects. @ me b*tches i'll debate more with you
yeah you can turn notifications off on discord and actually discords system of pinging you if you're mentioned is so much better.
for example, my epicmafia username was (once upon a time) sensory. often times my friends would shorten this to "sens" or "sen" out of laziness. using skype's pinging system, i had "sens" and "sen" set as words that would notify me whenever they were said in chat. this is a HUGE PROBLEM as there are tons of words that have "sen" or "sens" in them, most notably my friends' favorite phrase to say (just to annoy me) "makes sense". now consider if i had the username i use currently during my time on skype... imagine me having to set "cute" as a word that would ping me every time it was said to make sure that i'm getting notified every time someone is trying talk to me. this would be a whole a$$ mess as skype would ping me anytime someone said the word "cute" whether or not it pertains to me.
with discords mention system, however, i will ONLY get a notification if someone pings @myusername, @here, or @everyone (the latter two of which can be suppressed. you can even suppress ALL mentions but that's up to you). this is functionally better as just because someone is talking about me doesn't necessarily mean that they want to talk TO me or that they want me involved in a conversation. it doesn't unnecessarily ping me and divert attention away from whatever i could be doing at any present moment that might be more important than someone casually saying "nikki sukz lol" in a text chat.
Having no way to turn notifications off on discord is a negative
Also not knowing how many different individual chats have been bumped is a downside too. Skype displays a number in the tray
Individual servers get annoying to keep up with when you're in like 10 and each has 5-6 channels, it's sort of annoying.
Discord does both of those first two things and Nikki already clearly stated you can hide and mute channels that you have no interest in keeping up with...

Skype 2008 was the best though and it's a shame they didn't just leave skype as is

Overall yeah discord seems mega better, but to say that there's nothing Skype does better would be wrong
Also I can't wait for years later people to realize they have huge chunks of their machines being ate up by deposits of discord garbage like renders just like Skype does
