Throughout the past I've seen quite a few people modded and demoded, on both ends for silly reasons. It's no secret that people pick on mod choices as just a big popularity contest, but is this poking fun at the thought excusing the [insert current owner here]'s choice in moderator-ship.
The most recent case was with the demodding of 3 people, 1 undeserving of what happened and 2 who did absolutely nothing wrong in the first place. After this, 2 people who never even posted an application was let through, one as a 'temp' but there's been 0 talk about them being replaced. They've gone from a temp to a perma.
While I was mod, most of the reasoning included "they're not known enough to the community" or "they're too popular and it may look like a popularity contest". By trying to avoid making it a popularity contest, are we making it a popularity contest?
All decisions are extremely biased. While voting for moderators have been discarded as a "popularity contest", wouldn't that be better than just the owner picking someone who's clique enough but not too much that people would rip into them?
Because you are scared to speak your mind now that you are a mod. If you have a different opinion than the clique you like to talk in private about it rather than openly.

there are several people before i got modded that said that i would be a good mod
how do they know that? im popular enough on EM (ikr a dream come true) so that people would know the way i handle stuff and they thought that was a good thing
now get a random user that nobody knows. he MAY be an excellent mod but there is no good way of knowing that, and also itd be hard to know if theyd actually be commited enough to actually mod the lobby
so yeah popularity does matter a bit, not because of circlejerking, but because you already have a solid idea of how someone could work as a mod, and you'd be playing it safe instead of gambling and seeing if a random user would work
but its not an exclusive requirement. there have been people that weren't that well known on the site that were modded (kagerrou or even japter for people that dont come on chatbox too much)
Bebop shouldn't be allowed to choose moderators as each and every single one of the moderators he has chosen have turned out to be utter failures and it is clear that his decision making skills are subpar.
