don't starve itself is NOT multiplayer, but don't starve together is a separate game which automatically comes with don't starve (it's still in beta mode). you can play on a server with several people at a time in don't starve together and it has the same objectives and goals as well as the same environments, characters, creatures, game items etc

basically the objective is in the name: don't starve. you're thrown into the wilderness and you have to survive and eventually thrive
