Just figure out something that you want to build and then research what you need to build it. Don't worry about having enough knowledge to build something because you never will have enough.
deleteddeletedalmost 10 years ago
maybe something involving scraping and string manipulation. lots of that in webdev!
Renaldoalmost 10 years ago
yeah, that's a good point. I just need to figure out what I want to make.

I also need to learn stuff too. I don't have enough knowledge yet to really know how to think about a project.
Togepialmost 10 years ago
If you give yourself a side project, it'll motivate you. That's what I had to do for myself at least.
Renaldoalmost 10 years ago
Yeah it's pretty cool. We did HTML/CSS last week and I felt pretty confident in it.

I just need to have more mental energy to sit and learn it after hours.
Togepialmost 10 years ago
Ooooo, fun fun!!
Renaldoalmost 10 years ago
yeah it's all a learning curve, I suppose.

I'm taking an intro course at night and we're doing javascript on Tuesday, wish me luck.

Any language that allows anonymous functions can f*ck right off. There are a lot of people that like it though! I think when I become more comfortable with it I won't be so dramatic about it.
Renaldoalmost 10 years ago
yeah my colleagues were saying no new startups are using ruby at all, it's all javascript. Our CTO is a big ruby guy so we use it because he's a ruby wizard.

It's weird that javascript is so popular yet no one seems to like it at all.

I've kind of started planning out what I want to do after this position, and I'm going to go to whatever technology interests me. Right now I'm all about the further evolution cloud services so maybe try to get a job with CloudFoundry or something
makes sense. the devs in my company are saying they think everything is going to be javascript eventually. ruby is falling by the wayside, or as i like to say, off the rails.
looool Ruby was definitely a fad language and is quickly becoming something that most companies are not really hiring for. Javascript is the devil, but I know it, and they're right in a sense. I primarily use that for any web facing or mobile development.

That's great, I'm happy to hear that. I'm kinda reaching that point in my job too where it's starting to feel like i'm not getting any better at it.
I've also been feeling like that, but its the nature of the company and the constructed environment though.
I'd imagine it's very cyclical for you as well, right?
Seeing as every week is exactly the same shows and I've been working 7 days a week for the last 7 months, you could say that. haha

After you get bored of your current spot, you should try a smaller company, you'll get to do and see a lot more.
Togepialmost 10 years ago
I'm the type of person that if I ever get bored or feel as though I can't progress any further in the position I'm in, I start looking elsewhere.

I have zero knowledge in this area. I much prefer more refined, intellectual pursuits, like shitposting

I'm sick so I'm staying in. I drank the past two nights and it didn't end up well for me. :( So I'm here to shitpost and to fight Steve.
I just want to make sure everyone knows that it's not going great for me.
what's wrong, steve?
I mean I don't really watch UFC, nor do I know if you do, but I know enough about it to know that it's going about as well as CM Punk in his fight about a week or so ago.
Ya Stevie what's wrong??
