Foyle is quiet, understated, and moral in an old-school sense; it's like the antithesis of loud obnoxious antiheroes like the guy in The Mentalist and other US shows. Also the actor radiates intelligence.

It's really maddeningly unremarkable. If you want to see a proper execution of "prodigiously smart detective" then you should watch Foyle's War, which is also one of the best TV shows ever.
