Nico is an appealing character because her imperfections. With the former members of the idol research club having left because her passion was too strong for them to keep up with, Nico develops a bitter stance towards those who don't live up to her standard. She's forced to chase her dream alone in a field consisting solely of teams due to her enthusiasm. Her nico ni persona is something she only does for her perceived audience. Nico doesn't have a natural born "cute personality", a necessary talent for the field so she makes up for it with effort. It's similar to a musician who needs to put in more hours of practice to reach a similar height of proficiency than someone with greater natural talent. Her sharp attitude is akin to a poor technical musical habit which I find extremely endearing. Passion over talent is what her character is about. Nico molds herself to pursue what she loves despite her faults. This kind of imperfect appeal is hard to put a dot on or even realize, but I think it's the main reason some people are drawn to her.
