What is Pocketing

I hear a lot of players use this term now and it's unfamiliar/new to me; I've asked numerous people what it is and I've received numerous different definitions. I've never seen it until late 2015

What is pocketing?

My guess would be when you TR someone to try and get on their good side since that's something that doesn't really have a term for it yet, but I actually have no idea what "pocketing" is or what it refers to.

My question has been answered ITT:

Pocketing is when you townread a player in the hopes of getting them to townread you.

IMO this isn't scummy or townie outright but context plays a big role in it

I've always interpreted the term as gaining ultimate control over someone so they can be used at your disposal ("the people you carry in your pocket, like so many nickels and dimes"). This is typically achieved through emotional appeals / pleas.

It works for me well on 3way to "pocket" one person just to hammer him as town... #sodamoves

pocketing is basically buddying. But, it means you're saving it for later in the game. buddying is more of a here and now thing. At least that's what I thought.

Pocketing is used negatively in my experience and it is when a scum is hard buddying a town in order to get them on their side to the point where the town is snuggly inside the mafia's pocket and the mafia can work them any which way they want.
