I was going to propose that people could vote for moderators and then lucid could check the people by denying a person become moderator, but I never got around to it. Another point of contention is whether score or karma limits should be placed on voting. It would be wonderful if we had an avenue to discuss this.

I have started a petition to have owl unmodded. The petition does not have any actual weight currently, but I hope it will get the word out and provide a good gauge for how many people will vote for moderators

It is a basic principle of logic that something that is not contested will become tyrannous. owl is a perfect example of a moderator that is detached from the desires of EM's user base. you are correct, but this is a website and you shouldn't take it this seriously
