Labour is a Social Democratic party, left of anything you have in America. The Conservatives tie up roughly to the Democrats of America, with UKIP (tiny party) being the Republicans.

America's political scale is screwed up by not having a real centre-left party. The Democrats would be centre-right almost anywhere else.

Agreed. Even if the candidate doesn't win - a lot of votes for them puts some pressure for their local policies to be at least be partially enacted.
