Nobody really cares about the usage of words. I find that the only people who usually do are pseudo-intellectuals who have only learned to parrot the speech bandwagoned by the netizens of tumblr and tumblr-like sites. Walk into any college level course or graduate level course on gender studies teaching foucault, butler, or beauvoir (actually attended some of Butler's public events) and you'll find that the actual usage of the word gay (or most "derogatory terms" for that matter) is actually considered superfluous to the actually discussion at hand.

It's not so much the usage of the word as it is about the underlying intention behind the usage.

I don't understand why someone spent the time to state the obvious in a thread, neither do I understand why so many people have elected to restate the obvious in the same thread. The groupthink is strong.

Well it never bothered me, even tho I'm gay, because the only people who use it are immature buttholes, and they just make a fool out of themselves when they use it, or they grow out of it because they learn what being gay actually means.

it's pretty much dying out as an insult anyway. half the time when someone says it they're doing it ironically.

It took me a long time to understand people were using it as an insult. As a middle schooler, I was always very confused...
