Improving Round Diversity

thebrontosaurusover 11 years ago

Alright so the 'banning guns' thread gave me an idea and I'd like to make a separate thread outlinining my thoughts and see if it's something the competitive community would be interested in pursuing.

Current System

  • A setup can only be comped once every 3 rounds
  • Variants are at mod discretion on a case-by-case basis

Proposed Changes

  • A setup can only be comped once every 5 rounds
  • Established variants kept on a running list (that will be public); new variants looked at by mods on a case-by-case basis

Goals

  • Improve diversity: This would mean that you'd only see certain setups at minimum every 50 days or 2 months or so (assuming ~10 day rounds). At minimum, you would see 30 different setups before seeing the same one comped again, allowing for a greater variety of setups to get exposure and giving people an opportunity to run on setups they like that may be less popular.
  • Tighten up what constitutes as a variant: makes things more objective and less on what the current admin/mod team thinks. This way there won't be as much debate over what is a variant or not the day of the round, it'll be pre-established and known, so people will know what they can and cannot comp

Please discuss. I'd also like to hear what the current mods think of this since they're the ones who will be enforcing this.

No. If people comp all the decent setups in the first 3-4 rounds then you're basically guaranteed a round of crap.
/thread
It's been proven before that people would play same old crappy setups rather than giving new setups a try.

1.We have had rounds in which an anon version of a setup which was comp'ed the previous round has been comp'ed. This is totally not-ok and needs to change.
2.Also setups like A&R and A&D are basically a variant of each other and they're played the exact same way with almost same payout.
Add these 2 to what bronto said and EM's competitive rounds are gonna be way more fun than now.

this will just make it so there are more rounds where nothing good is competitive. the only way to get more good comp setups is to have setup building competitions for tokens.
this also is a decent idea

but yeah anyway re: topic at hand, you've gotta realize that the crowd who wants new and interesting setups is a vast vocal minority to the people that just want to play things they're comfortable with. the best way to bridge that gap isn't to force the majority to play setups they're uncomfortable with, it's to make them comfortable with more setups. think about how many times you've played, like, red heart LOBL, and at least 2 of the people that showed up complained about the setup being too hard because the guide was so vague
This is definitely part of the problem, but it doesn't really solve the issue of motivating the general EM crowd to make a new comp-viable setup every now and then. I feel like there should be a whole system for that all on its own. A new setup challenge/competition every month with a few competent judges seems like a good idea.

If half the people here who want this change think about when they last played red heart LOBL, the answer is probably somewhere between months ago and never.

has keri thirsted after peter yet because if not i'm gonna write her some instructions, such as going into sandbox and telling people you're suicidal so he thinks he has plausible cover for when he hits on you incessantly
if that's what it takes to be the next togepi i'd like to rescind my earlier readiness.
